The Digital Shootout is a annual underwater photography workshop, usually held in the Caribbean in places like Bonaire for the last few years. This year it was in Little Cayman, and there were about 30 underwater photographers in attendance. Staff was onsite from Backscatter Photo, Canon, Light & Motion and Aquatica. Well-known underwater photographers Berkley White and Doug Sloss gave several excellent workshops. Even though hurricane Alex tried to blow in, the weather held up enough to complete most of the diving schedule. Photo Gallery.

Backscatter recently dove again with the Manthiri. A refit has given the Manthiri a large and gracious air conditioned salon. Half of this salon is organized with couches into cozy islands where small groups of passengers may gather to visit, or seek privacy in their book. The other half of this comfortable salon serves as the dining room with two large round tables giving everyone plenty of elbowroom. The food was superb and lavish with a European/American/Indian flair. There is a meat and a fish course at every meal. No report about this fine dive boat would be complete without mentioning the exceptional crew that acts as your host, food service, cabin maintenance, and dive crew. Working in exceptional harmony this crew of eleven will have learned all your habits by the second day. Spring passions: Wildflowers around Arizona

Some years the blooms erupt with a profound sense of purpose, sweeping across hillsides in endless waves. Right now, the color is spotty. It all depends on the amount of rain and the timing of rain. Chasing wildflowers isn’t always about finding mass groupings. Sometimes it’s in the discovery of unexpected delights.
I rode to Bartlett Lake where the Mexican gold poppies are the showstoppers. They appeared in isolated clusters, not yet covering the hillsides in a sea of luminous orange. I also spotted desert marigold, lupine and globemallow in the mix. Gallery.

Winter in Red Rock Country Project

I just returned from a week-long road trip which included Sedona, The Grand Canyon, Page, Monument Valley, Canyon De Chelly and Window Rock. In Monument Valley I used Navajo Spirit Tours, and Tseyi’ Jeep Tour in Canyon De Chelly. In both cases I drove my own car with them inside, which is called a “step-in” guide.

This photo safari walk-about required getting up before the sun and late night time-lapse star trail exposures while painting trees with a flashlight. Downloading, uploading, sensor cleaning and scratching my camera and lenses. Not to mention using 4wd low range going 1MPH, crossing rising muddy streams, and almost driving right over a muddy cliff at one point. I could be found standing in streams, wrestling a tripod, working with cold numb hands, being in caves, trekking using eroded ancient Anasazi footholds, tromping through snow, missing meals (plus a dry reservation/no alcohol), long drives, getting lost and all with really soar feet. I can’t wait to do it again and again. Life is an adventure, or nothing.

Arial Arizona

Northern Arizona recently had some of the biggest snow dumps on record, so it was a good time to jump in a plane and see what the camera could see. Sedona, The San Francisco Peaks, Sunset Crater, Flagstaff, Lake Pleasant and all parts in between. A panoramic 360 degree lens and infrared camera also added to the fun.

Desert watercolors

The Four Peaks Mountains near Fountain Hills in Arizona look great when they get snow on them. The contrast between the desert sequaro cactus and the cold winter weather is music to my eyes. When you use an infrared camera, things really start to rock & roll. I wasn’t the only one up there yesterday, I noticed several hot blooded shutterbugs at dusk shooting away, some using tripods like myself.
